How do we ensure human and machine safety?

According to the latest global developments in plant safety systems, there is a strong growing demand for both hardware and the entire organisation around it.Only fully reliable process automation hardware, combined with a comprehensive safety management system, will meet the future requirements of process plants.

As a leading global manufacturer of process instrumentation and measurement solutions, KROHNE has implemented all relevant points in a comprehensive portfolio of measurement equipment, which meets the latest international safety standards and incorporates advanced safety features.

Implementation of SIL in process equipment requires not only certain engineering and circuit design, but also in-depth knowledge of the specific characteristics of the meter type. Our SIL instruments have proven themselves in extensive testing and field use, providing the quality and operational reliability to minimise risks in safety-related applications.

SIL 2/3 certification for radar level gauges

In 1989, we introduced the first FMCW radar. We have always implemented the knowledge gained from this in our measurement designs.

OPTIWAVE radars are SIL 2/3 certified according to IEC 61508 and meet the highest safety standards, providing the quality and operational reliability to minimise risk in safety-critical applications.

Interference from tank walls, internal obstructions or long nozzles pose no challenges to our 80 GHz radar transmitters (FMCW). The narrow beam provides a sharper focus on your medium, whether liquid or solid.

Highlights

  • SIL 2/3 certified (SIL 3 1oo2) according to IEC 61508 for safety-related applications

  • Highest safety standards for your process

  • Extensive choice of process connections from ¾" upwards

  • Lens, drop and horn antennas for all process and installation conditions

  • Measuring range from the antenna edge up to 30 m

High-quality signal amplifier for mass flow meters

The MFC 400 is the mass flow signal amplifier for all KROHNE coriolis mass flow meters. The amplifier translates raw signals from the instrument into signals, which a system and human can monitor and interpret. This sounds complex, but fundamentally the amplifier provides a stable and accurate measurement of mass flow, density and temperature, of liquids or gases. From cryogenic liquids to high temperatures and single- or multi-phase liquids.

Besides its basic function, the amplifier can also be used in safety applications. Indeed, the amplifier has been developed according to the IEC 61508 safety standard and, depending on the I/O and flow sensor variant, is suitable for safety applications SIL 2 / 3.The diagnostics conform to the NAMUR standard NE 107 for status and fault handling. This not only enables comprehensive (self-)monitoring of the internal circuits and information about the health of the flow sensor, but also provides essential information about the process conditions. Measured values and diagnostic information can be transmitted via Fieldbus interfaces, including HART®, RS485 Modbus, FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus, PROFIBUS® and PROFINET IO.

In addition, in combination with the OPTICHECK Flow Mobile app, commissioning, verification, diagnosis and monitoring of all OPTIMASS x400 flow meters is also possible with a smartphone or tablet, via a secure wireless Bluetooth® connection (< 20 m).

Highlights

  • Thanks to Entrained Gas Management (EGM™) stable in multi-phase applications

  • Smart diagnostics according to NAMUR NE 107

  • Fully developed for safety applications according to IEC 61508 2010

  • Diagnostic coverage of >96%

  • Diagnostic test interval of less than one minute: this allows use in SIL 3 applications or with continuous data requirements, the highest specified operating levels

  • SIL 3 software certification guarantees the lowest possible number of systematic software errors

  • The only Coriolis mass flow meters on the market that allow secure wireless access via Bluetooth® or remotely via HART®, even in safety-related applications
